I never said anything about multiclassing in order to be a better X, but that each class has a developed identity by at most 3rd level due to front-loading. Some are good to go from level 1, others need level 3.

  • Sorcerer: Sorcerous Origin, Font of MagicĮach class's identity should be defined within the first two levels, give or take.
  • Ranger: Favoured Enemy, Natural Explorer.
  • Monk: Martial Arts, Ki, Unarmoured Defense.
  • Cleric: Divine Domain + Feature, Turn Undead/Channel Divinity.
  • Barbarian: Rage, Unarmoured Defense, Reckless Attack.
  • Those are extremely Wizardly and Bardic things, respectively. Bard 2 gets Inspiration (which doesn't scale with Bard levels but your CHA mod) and Jack of All Trades. Wizard 2 gets you Arcane Recovery as well as the School feature, most notably the Divination Wizard's Portent which is one of the most ridiculous abilities in the game.
